<>China and Taiwan should review their attitudes toward Japan conflicting territorial disputes over the Diaoyutai Islands have prompted demonstrations in both China and Japan.

<>

<>Further, two Taiwanese stores selling Japanese goods in Xian, Shannxi province, were torched by protesters and two Japanese department stores in Chendu, Sichuan Province, were forced to briefly close after demonstrators pelted their buildings with stones.

<>

<>Both these events are signs of the Chinese people's deep-rooted hostility toward Japan.

<>

<>The Taiwanese people, on the other hand, are almost apathetic about the disputes, even though its government also lays territorial claims to the same uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

<>

<>As a people, Taiwan seems to have forgotten about Japan's colonial rule over the island.

<>

<>Instead, many seem impressed with Japan and look towards it with favor. Students long for CDs, movies, apparel, computer games, sportswear, and 3C products all made in Japan.

<>

<>Indeed, they feel ashamed if they don't have the latest Japanese goods that are popular among their peers.

<>

<>Both the anti-Japanese complex plaguing China and the apathy the Taiwanese people feel about the territorial dispute with Japan are abnormal.

<>

<>It is time for both to re-consider their approach to the issue - with the Chinese trying to keep a cool head while dealing with Tokyo, and with the Taiwanese thinking about backing their government and defending the country's territory more vigorously.
